Grade 3: Media Literacy Quiz Review

Let's look at a couple common forms of media together to practise for our quiz on Thursday.

THE LORAX MOVIE TRAILER

1. Who is the Intended Audience? (Adults or children; boys, girls or both?)
The Intended Audience is boys and girls.

2. How do you know? (What clues tell you? Example: music, cartoon/real life, theme)
I know because the music is funny. I also know because it has cartoon characters. I know because the theme is funny or silly.

3. What is the Intended Purpose? (Why did they create this trailer?)
They created this trailer because they want to make kids laugh. They wanted more people to know about the movie because they want to make money. They also might want people to see if they like it or not.

4. What type of Media is this? (Print, film, radio?)
It is a film. 
 
5. How do you know?
I know it is a film because you can see, hear and watch it.

1. Who is the Intended Audience? (Adults or children; boys, girls or both?)
The Intended Audience is children.  It is a family movie.

2. How do you know? (What clues tell you? Example: music, cartoon/real life, theme)
The pictures are cartoon, not real people. The music is happy. If it was an adult movie, maybe the music would be loud or scary.

Level 4:  I know this is for children because it is funny. It is funny because in the movie the  boy flew the airplane in the girl's backyard on purpose because he likes her. When the boy's airplane flew into the yard he yelled, "Yes!"

3. What is the Intended Purpose? (Why did they create this trailer?)
The Intended Purpose is to get people to watch the movie because it advertises the movie.

4. What type of Media is this? (Print, film, radio?)
 This type of media is film because it is not just a still image. 

5. How do you know?
I know because there are moving images and people are talking.


COURAGEOUS MOVIE TRAILER (Rachel)


1. Who is the Intended Audience? (Adults or children; boys, girls or both?)
The intended audience is adults because it says honour begins at home it show that how the fathers want to connect withe their children.

2. How do you know? (What clues tell you? Example: music, cartoon/real life, theme)
We know it isn't for children because it is violent in some parts.

3. What is the Intended Purpose? (Why did they create this trailer?)
The intended purpose is to make other people watch this film because they want fathers to be better.

4. What type of Media is this? (Print Film, Radio?) How do you know?
  This media is a film because, it is not just a 3:00 minute video, there are real people.

The Pastor and the Policeman

The intended audience is for us to vote for them in the amazing race
The people that are choosing who are going to be on the amazing race(auditioners)
2. What is the Intended Purpose?
If they go on tv they might talk about God
If they get enough viewers, they can get money
Get on the amazing race
3. What is the message? How did they communicate their message? (E.g. music, parody, comedy, personal)
The message is that they would like to get on the amazing race 
Ainley thinks that if they do get on the amazing race, people should vote for them

Too much talking, not all of it was relative
Having the scenes changing was good, because it kept it interesting

They could have done actions to emphasize what they were like

Grade 5: Stop Smoking Video Advertisement

Stop Smoking Video Advertisement:


1. Who is the Intended Audience?
- Adults who smoke and teenagers who want to smoke
- Kids who's parents smoke and that they want to copy them
- Anyone who smokes
2. What is the Intended Purpose?
- To tell smokers not to smoke
- To tell teenagers to tell kids not to smoke
- Kids can make a difference

3. What is the message? How was it communicated?
- Nobody can help you stop smoking but only yourself can
- To tell adults that if they smoke kids can smoke too

4. How effective was their presentation?
- VERY effective; because the adults stopped smoking their cigarettes and threw them away while they kept their brochure
- Effective; because adults often tell kids what to do, but in the video, the kids are reminding the adults not to smoke

5. How could they have communicated better?
- Make the video English
- Include a photo of a sick person
- Instead of giving them a brochure, they should talk about why he/she should stop smoking, and not just giving the brochure

Grade 8: Pastor and the Policeman

Pastor and Policeman Video:

1. Who is the Intended Audience?
  • people of Toronto (Torontonians)?
  • CTV people (crew and producers of The Amazing Race)
  •  people at the pastor's church

2. What is the Intended Purpose?
  • getting attention for their audition
  • try to get people to convert to Christianity
  • raise awareness for Christianity

3. What is the message? How was it communicated?
  •  The message is that they should be voted for The Amazing Race because of the cool combination of "the pastor and the policeman." It would attract a lot of people because of the dynamic.
  • It was communicated by talking about themselves
  • It was communicated by going around and trying to show off their personalities and convey their vibrant personality and awesomeness.

4. How effective was their presentation?
  • It was kind of scrappy because it was sort of boring and not really engaging. 
  • They just talked and gave too much info to absorb. 
  • It seemed too lengthy. 
  • he topics were all over the place.

  • Less talking!
